A Mews Courtyard
"Contemporary Outdoor Space"The situation:
A Mews Courtyard
A small (7.2m x 5.5m) mainly lightly shaded Mews rear garden, with tired looking gravel, paving and some plant beds, surrounded by fencing and climbers. As the property is within a conservation area, full planning permission was required and granted.
The brief:
The Clients, a retired couple wished to create a contemporary, relaxing stylish outdoor space, with a restricted planting colour scheme and accommodating a table and chairs for 6 people, improving their mews courtyard.
The garden was cleared and the fencing removed. New sandstone paving in a light colour was laid with a modern ‘sawn’ finish to give a spacious feel. New bespoke slatted screen style fencing and gate was built onsite using western red cedar wood. Fence mounted occasional lighting was installed.
For ease of maintenance, the clients wanted to have the planting in the garden in contemporary containers. New large containers were sourced in ‘Textured Mat Graphite’ and contrasting smooth ‘Silver Grey’ colours. Planting was chosen suitable for light shady conditions, with textural foliage, scented white or pale yellow flowers, some evergreen interest, and spring bulbs for long seasonal interest.
The courtyard was completed in 2020 and has been much used and appreciated outdoor space during Covid.
